Ducati currently has only one world title, won in 2007 thanks to Casey Stoner, the only one so far to be able to best interpret the “red” of Borgo Panigale. 23 are the victories won by the couple, in four years of partnership, which however risked failure before being born. To tell what happened behind the scenes was the former sporting director of the LCR team, Oscar Haro, since for that year Casey had a contract with the team headed by former driver Lucio Cecchinello.
Cecchinello’s help
The Spaniard said: “Livio Suppo (Ducati executive at the time) wanted to hire Stoner, but Casey had a two-year contract with HRC. There was a meeting in Portugal and Cecchinello responded to his proposal: ‘I know Casey’s dream is to become an official driver. I’m not going to ruin his life even if he’s tied to us for another year. ‘“. At this point, however, a substitute was needed for the private team, who became interested in Sete Gibernau, but things did not go well: “We explained to him that we were a satellite team and didn’t have an infinite budget, but he could have raced with a Michelin-wheeled Honda. He got stuck and we gave up ”. At the suggestion of engineer Ramon Forcada, the team decided to turn to Carlos Checa and here’s how it went: “It was at the hotel bar. I asked him if he intended to ride our bike, he asked me if it was Honda-Michelin, the best at the time. When I nodded, he said, ‘Give me a napkin and let’s sign‘”. This allowed Ducati to write a page in MotoGP history, the most glorious so far.
Here is the 2022 calendar of the top class and the championship standings.
