Watch out for Toprak Razgatlioglu! The Turkish rider from Yamaha was the fastest in FP3, the last free practice session of the Netherlands round, the second round of the Superbike World Championship that will take place this weekend in Assen. He lapped in 1’34 ”540, so his best time remains that of FP1, second overall; however, in the conditions of Saturday he appears to be the most “on the ball” when Superpole is an hour and a half away, and a little more in race 1.
The absolute best time is that of Alvaro Bautista, Ducati team leader who had lapped in 1’34 ”382 the day before and on Saturday is 0” 382 behind the leader. Fourth of the FP3 but ready to fight for the victory.
There are some surprises
Rather, it is the two pilots who entered the middle who are surprised: the second time of FP3 is Iker Lecuona, on this track very fast with the Honda HRC. He further lowered his time, dropping to 1’34 ”746, just over two tenths from Razgatlioglu; however towards the end of the session he crashed and the mechanics will have to run to rearrange the bike. Even greater surprise for the third time of the “independent” driver Philipp Oettl with the Ducati of the GoEleven team: the day before he had not impressed and instead took a mighty leap.
Jonathan Rea, six-time world champion who has already won 15 times in Assen, is not far off with the fifth fastest time of the morning at 0 ”419.
The second man from Yamaha follows him Andrea Locatelli, his Kawasaki teammate Alex Lowes, and Garrett Gerloff who for once is not the best of the “independents”. Scott Redding and Michael Ruben Rinaldi, one with the second factory Ducati and the other with the first of the BMW factories, complete the top ten of this session, from which Xavi Vierge remains out for 0 ”438 with the second Honda HRC.
