VERONA. ‘Ciccio’ Caputo deceives Sampdoria, the former Gianluca Caprari brings it back down to earth. After three consecutive defeats, the Sampdoria team manages to stop the negative streak and win a good draw on Bentegodi’s ground, with a less brilliant Verona than the victory won in Bergamo, but surprised by the attitude of the opponents. In fact, Giampaolo’s players are good at withstanding the impact on a physical level and playing a shrewd game on the defensive stage.
Verona and Sampdoria play a contracted first half, definitely blocked. The Venetians try to play the game, at the opening they also have a good chance with Faraoni, primed by the cross on the opposite side of Lazovic, but then Giampaolo’s team is good at closing the spaces, in creating density in the middle of the field, to prevent the lines of passage to the two half shoes Caprari and Barak, rendered inactive by an attentive and always concentrated attitude. Verona does not find spaces and pays a high price for defensive inattention. Thorsby takes advantage of body and inches, tames a ball on the edge of the yellow-blue area and rewards the inclusion of Caputo who goes to the conclusion but, after having already kicked, suffers a stomp from Guenter. Ayroldi concedes the penalty: from the spot Caputo gets the conclusion saved by Montipò, but then reaffirms in the unguarded goal.
In the second half, the technical outline is almost identical. Verona tries to find spaces, Sampdoria is good at closing them. The draw comes after half an hour, but it is an obvious mistake by the Sampdoria rearguard. On the launch of the Verona defense to skip the midfield, Yoshida goes up to put the Scala strikers offside, but Murru lowers himself and keeps everyone in the game. Caprari has technique to control his first attempt, rejected by the Japanese himself, skip Audero and deposit in the Ligurian door. Verona have the inertia of the match in their hands, but they don’t have the strength to put Sampdoria on the ropes. Indeed, it is Giampaolo’s team that ends up in growth and closes in attack. It is only a point, but it is an excellent viaticum for the next match that is worth the season: there is the city derby against Genoa.
