Until now used only for pedestrian crossings, the traffic lights with countdown will also be used for cars (and obviously also motorcycles). The intent is to speed up traffic and, at the same time, increase road safety. This was announced by the Association of Traffic Police Supporters and Friends (Asaps), according to which a decree from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Sustainable Mobility would be on the way to regulate its use throughout Italy.
“After 12 years, after an infinite gestation – explained Luigi Altamura, Commander of the Municipal Police Corps of Verona and delegate of the Association of traffic police friends – the Ministry decree is in the pipeline, defining the characteristics for the homologation and for the installation of traffic lights with the residual time of switching on the lights. Law 120 of 2010 – added the representatives Asaps – had indicated this in Article 60 and the ministerial decree of 27 April 2017 had specified some rules and is repealed by the new text currently being approved. But the note from the Ministry of Economic Development had indicated the need for a revision of the decree, with the consequent notification to the European Commission of the new draft regulation for the regulation of traffic lights with countdown “.
In short, it took some time but, apparently, we are on the home straight. According to studies and surveys carried out, countdown traffic lights should both speed up traffic by decreasing “dead times” and increase road safety by reducing the possibility of an accident or investment.

Where they will be installed
The new devices will be mounted only on existing systems and already identified at the intersections. More specifically, the decree under study should provide for mandatory installation in some specific situations, such as for example intersections where there are pedestrian or bicycle crossings, roads that have a number of lanes greater than two, or that require at least 20 seconds for the crossing, or near urban intersections where traffic infraction detection systems are installed with red traffic lights and where the duration of the yellow is less than 5 seconds.
