Castillo: “Sexual crimes against children will not go unpunished”
The Peruvian President Pedro Castillo has stated that his government wants to impose the chemical castration mandatory for child rapists, among other measures against these crimes. “Enough with such violence: sexual crimes against children will not be tolerated by this government, nor will they go unpunished”, said Castillo saying he was “indignant” at the rape of a three-year-old girl that shocked the country. The measure proposed by the head of state must be approved by the Peruvian parliament. Castillo cited Russia, Poland, South Korea, Indonesia and Moldova as countries where chemical castration of rapists is already practiced. It consists in the administration of drugs that inhibit sexual desire, both preventively and against possible relapses. According to Peruvian Ministry of Women’s Rights, more than 21,000 minors have been victims of rape in the past four years. In 2021 alone, 6,929 cases were registered. In Peru, rapists of minors under the age of 14 face life imprisonment.
