Trainer Roger Schmidt ran out of superlatives to describe PSV’s win over Ajax in the cup final (2-1). “I am so incredibly proud,” he said. “What my team has done is unbelievable. I love my players for what they have done here.”
PSV fought for what it was worth against Leicester City on Thursday. But it wasn’t enough to advance to the Conference League semifinals. “But we were still there against Ajax. Of course it was all right”, Schmidt referred to, among other things, two rejected goals from Ajax. “But you also force that. And it has sometimes been bad this season.”
The season has already been successful for Schmidt, with a win of the KNVB Cup, the Johan Cruijff Scale and a quarterfinal in the Conference League. “That seems clear to me. You don’t have to win everything to speak of a successful season, right? Of course we also want to become champions. We are 4 points behind Ajax. We want to catch up in the last five rounds. We can only win five times and hope that Ajax will leave something behind. But the season has also been a success for me with second place. I really mean that.”
