During the years prior to the release of Cyberpunk 2077and buoyed by the great work of The Witcher: Wild Hunt, were marked by unprecedented hype for CD Projekt RED. That squad of rebels was shaping up to launch a game that could well be a milestone in the industry, in fact it was thought that there was potential to stand up to Grand Theft Auto V at a commercial level. The story was different, the game was released in a precarious state and the road to redemption is still not ending. Worse still, there are those who consider that the sales figures account for the disaster.
18 million copies fall short for the hype of Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt presented its financial report to investors and there the Polish company boasted the 18 million copies sold of Cyberpunk 2077. At first glance, the figure is good and of course many video games would like to have such a record, however, from another perspective it is considered a testimony to the failure of the former title that would mark the industry. The above after Jason Schreier, a journalist for Bloomberg and the independent analyst Benji Sales questioned the 18 million copies sold of Cyberpunk 2077 pointing out the market potential that it never took advantage of due to the problems faced.
Yup. Though I have a feeling sales legs will better over the next 2 years thanks to the recent patches really improving things and the expansion announced today to release in 2023
No doubt though that legs over the last year have been heavily impacted by the state of the game

Reality: Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 4 million copies in one year
As noted, Cyberpunk 2077 began its commercial cycle in December 2020 preceded by more than 13 million copies secured via pre-sale, in April 2021, the Polish company reported that they had already sold 13.7 million copies, closing all 14 in a short time. Taking into account the above, it is considered that the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 has sold 4 million more copies in just over a year is proof that the title still does not hook players and it is not for less because the updates do not end up convincing players. Also, let’s not forget the detail that most of the time, this game has been on sale so it’s rare that someone pays full price for it.
In case you missed it: Cyberpunk 2077 will not have a big rematch like No Man’s Sky
Seen from the perspective of Cyberpunk 2077it is not strange to think that the game should have sold many more copies by the date if everything had gone well and the CDPR project had survived the hype that they themselves created.
The actuality of Cyberpunk 2077 is that the improvements will continue, although CDPR pointed out that, for them, the most important thing was already corrected last year. Also, DLC plans are still active and new content is expected to come out in 2023.
