Several months ago it was announced that Vicarious Visions, the Activision studio that gave us the acclaimed remake of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 will disappear after merging with Blizzard Entertainment. This change did not take effect immediately and it was until today that the study ceased to exist.
Through social media, Vicarious Visions announced that they have officially merged with Blizzard Entertainment. What does this mean? That the development studio will keep its doors open in Albany, New York and that it will continue to work on different projects.
However, the reality is that the Vicarious Visions we know will cease to exist. Namely, the studio will now be part of Blizzard Entertainment (no longer Activision) and will work as one of its internal studios. Thus, all their projects will be signed by Blizzard Entertainment and will be games related to the franchises and series of this developer studio.
“We have officially merged with Blizzard Entertainment. Our development team will remain in Albany and is completely dedicated to Blizzard games,” Vicarious Visions said on Twitter before inviting the community to follow the official Blizzard account.

While it is good news that the former members of Vicarious Visions will not lose their jobs and will continue to work at Activision Blizzard King, it is still sad to see the end of the study. After all, this is a company that brought us great games that brought smiles to gamers.

What was Vicarious Visions?
In case you don’t know, Vicarious Visions was an American development studio that was founded in 1990. Its history began as a developer of different MS-DOS games that stood out for being really ambitious projects.
Over time, Vicarious Visions became a better known studio for their work on the series’ laptop ports. Tony Hawk Pro Skater. Their good work made Activision take the decision to acquire them in 2005 to take advantage of all their talent and development capacity.
As part of Activision Blizzard, Vicarious Visions continued to support with ports and new versions of games from franchises such as Guitar Hero Y Skylanders. It even got the chance to be the main studio for 2 installments of this toys-to-life franchise. In recent years, it stood out for being the studio that developed the remake of the first 2 installments of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and for the remake of Diablo II. They were also the developers of the remake of the original trilogy of Crash Bandicoot.
Considering that they are specialists in ports and remakes, we would not be surprised if the former Vicarious Visions team dedicates themselves to making these types of projects for Blizzard Entertainment. That said, it’s a team that can do a lot more, so they’re likely to surprise us.
What did you think of this merger? Do you think the former members of Vicarious Visions can do great things at Blizzard? Tell us in the comments.
