“I feel sorry for the snake.” Essa frase foi escrita no Twitter por Eduardo Bolsonaro em ataque à jornalista Miriam Leitão. Miriam was brutally tortured during the military dictatorship. She was pregnant and, among other horrors, her tormentors used a snake to torture her. And, yes, the federal deputy had the audacity to make a joke of it.
Apology for torture is a crime. Eduardo should be arrested or at the very least lose his position as a deputy. There is no disclaimer that works in such a case. Unless barbarism continues to be normalized in Brazil.
Unfortunately, he should not be punished. Just like his father never was. Eduardo follows in the footsteps of the president, who must be proud of his son’s misogynistic, pro-torture joke.
After all, on the day of the impeachment of President Dilma Roussef (another Brazilian woman victim of torture) he dedicated his vote to “Brilhante Ustra, the terror of Dilma Roussef”. Ustra, revered by the president, was head of Doi Codi, one of the main torture centers in Brazil, and was known for his cruelty. What did Bolsonaro do that day? He openly supported Dilma’s torture. And, as we know, not only was he not arrested or lost, he was also elected president.
Jair Bolsonaro has also said that the problem of the dictatorship was to have tortured and not killed. After that, I repeat, he was elected. Barbarism has already been normalized. And worshiping torturer paid off.
Men who hate women
Eduardo’s misogynistic phrase also recalls Jair’s famous attack on Congresswoman Maria do Rosário. “You’re too ugly to be raped” is a lot like “I feel sorry for the snake.” These women-hating men think rape or torture are acceptable “punishments.” Or acts that a woman “deserves”.
Hard to have words to describe the horror of a man in public office making fun of the torture of a pregnant woman. How did we get to this point? Where did the history lessons go?
Many women who missed history classes were tortured during the military dictatorship. In their case, cruelty increased with the practice of rape, introducing rats and snakes into their vaginas, torture in front of their children. Shocks in the private parts. Yes, it’s horrible.
In Germany, where I live, the horrors of Nazism are remembered so they won’t be repeated. The memories of the holocaust are not erased, there are monuments for everyone to remember the horror that once happened. Shame on him and he won’t be repeated.
The same should happen in Brazil when it comes to dictatorship. People need to be ashamed. As long as a deputy jokes about it on Twitter, thinking it’s shaking (and the worst thing is that this pleases many) we will continue to accept barbarism. It is unacceptable.
