The western wall of the old Middensluis was blown up with explosives yesterday, but that caused much more nuisance to the environment than expected. “Many local residents are shocked by the explosion that was clearly noticeable in a large radius around the Middensluis”, says the Nieuwe Sluis project group. “We regret this situation. We apologize for the inconvenience. We are evaluating the crash extensively.”
The explosion can be seen in these images:
The damage reports mainly concern cracks and other damage to buildings in the vicinity of the complex.
The old lock complex in Terneuzen will be demolished to make way for the New Lock, which will provide better access and smoother flow from the Western Scheldt to the Canal from Ghent to Terneuzen and beyond. The intention is that the first ship will sail through the Nieuwe Sluis in 2023.
