System Shock is a franchise that helped shape the genre and influenced other games in the atmospheric FPS genre, for which it is fondly remembered by fans. A few years ago it became known that there were plans to work on many new projects and even revive the series with a sequel, but unfortunately clues indicate that it will not come to fruition.
Days ago, Warren Spector and his OtherSide Entertainment studio reported that they were developing a game based on a completely new franchise that would be an immersive simulation with a focus on narrative that promised to be impacted by the user’s choices and style of play.
Something that caught a lot of attention is that the studio talked about this new project without saying a single word of System Shock 3a title that is supposed to have been in development since 2019. Well, Spector has just touched on the subject and there is bad news for fans waiting for the new adventure in the series.

¿System Shock 3 it was cancelled?
In an interview with VentureBeatWarren Spector was questioned about what happened with System Shock 3. The creative reiterated what was announced in 2020, when it was revealed that Tencent would take over the franchise: “It’s up to them to say what they want to say. There’s not much clarification I can give you.”
What is more worrying is that he confessed that OtherSide Entertainment worked on the development of System Shock 3 only in 2018 and 2019, apart from the fact that the maximum number of people working on the project was 17.
“There was a personal recovery period. I don’t know how to put it. I take this very personally, you know? Development isn’t just a job for me. It took me a while to get my creative juices flowing again. And then COVID hit. The world went crazy,” Spector said.
In case you missed it: that’s how great the remake looks System Shock.
What happened to the development of System Shock 3?
The new game of System Shock, as well as the participation of Warren Spector, was originally announced in 2015. The development would be carried out by OtherSide Entertainment and the distribution would be carried out by Starbreeze. However, the latter company ran into financial problems which ultimately caused Warren Spector’s studio to part ways with Starbreeeze, stating that he would take over the project.
There was no news about the title and 2 years ago the situation worsened when statements from former members of the studio came to light indicating that the development of the project was in trouble. It was later revealed that the giant Chinese company Tencent would be involved in the project and that it would be in charge of taking the franchise forward, although OtherSide Entertainment was expected to remain involved.
With the new declarations, the continuation of the project remains in doubt. It clearly ran into trouble and, in case Tencent is trying to get it off the ground, little would be left of the work done by Warren Spector and his study. Let’s remember that Warren Spector was deeply involved in the original installments.
It is important to clarify that this does not mean that the entire franchise of System Shock be in trouble. Several projects are currently under development, such as the virtual reality version of System Shock 2 for the Enhanced Editionas well as the remake of System Shock 2, which are run by Nightdive Studios and were recently delayed. In addition, the live-action series of the franchise continues.
