Newcomer Austin Cindric won the Daytona 500, the opening race of the NASCAR 2022 championship (the show at the Los Angeles Coliseum was not valid for the rankings). The American from Penske, at the wheel of the team’s Ford, gave a special gift to Roger Penske, historic former driver and owner of the homonymous team, who turned 85 on February 20. “Happy birthday Roger! And thanks for everything”, shouted Cindric as soon as he got out of his Ford still on the track, in front of the 120,000 admitted to the Florida racetrack. On the podium also Bubba Wallace (Toyota of Michael Jordan’s team) and Chase Briscoe (Ford of Haas team).

The 23-year-old from Columbus, Ohio managed Penske’s strategy perfectly, finding himself in front after the restart and narrowly beating Wallace to hit the Daytona 500. Usual convulsive final with two Penske riders, Cindric and Blaney (4th at the finish) , to team up and beat the competition. For Roger Penske it is the third Daytona won as a team owner, for Ford it is the number 17 triumph in the American classic. The Daytona 500 had never been won by a rookie driver, an aspect that adds an aura of legend to Cindric’s already sensational success.

Mocking race for Chase Elliott, one of the big favorites of the race. The Chevrolet driver, the 2020 Nascar champion, finished the Daytona 500 in tenth place: a few hours earlier his team, Hendrick Motorsports, had announced the renewal of the contract – expiring at the end of the season – until 2027 with the 26-year-old from Georgia. Accident in the first part of the race and hopes immediately burned for another great contender for the 2002 Daytona, because Danny Hamlin – winner three times in Florida – was involved in a carom along with Keselowski, Byron and Kyle Busch. Jacques Villeneuve finished in twenty-second place.
