OM suspects larger network behind fraud at GGD with QR codes

Last November, an investigation by RTL Nieuws showed that tens of thousands of false QR codes were in circulation due to large-scale fraud at the GGD location in Schiphol. The Public Prosecution Service said today that the exact scope of the case is still being investigated.

Five suspects

At the moment, the Public Prosecution Service has five suspects on the grain. They worked at the test and vaccination location of the GGD at Schiphol and had access to the computer systems there.

According to counsel for suspect Nadir L. (23), who worked at the GGD through an employment agency, it is also questionable whether anything of the suggested size will be left in the future.

Thousands of QR codes

According to him, thousands of QR codes were issued via his client’s computer account. “But it is not clear at all how many of them have been forged. Everything has been lumped together.” It is also not said that any counterfeits were made by his client. L. wants to make a statement soon.

Two of his co-defendants have already partially confessed, at least as far as their own part is concerned. Counsel for one of them said today that her client is “ashamed and wants to clean up.” The fact that she only wants to explain ‘to a certain extent’, according to the lawyer, has mainly to do with ‘concerns she has about her own safety’.

All three lawyers asked the court to release their clients from custody. That request was met with great resistance from the prosecutor, who accused the suspects of trying to make an easy financial contribution “from the biggest health crisis of the past hundred years”.

Chance of recurrence

He also charged them with being silent ‘when it comes to people who could be behind this’ and said there was a great danger that they would make the mistake again. In L.’s case, he thought that this suspect should first open a book himself.

The court will decide on the requests tomorrow.
