Weather conditions in the run-up to the Beijing Winter Olympics in early February are “extremely unfavorable,” said a spokesman for China’s Environment Ministry. Beijing and the surrounding Hebei province are prone to smog during the winter months.
The authorities are taking emergency measures to contain severe air pollution. In particular, the activities of polluting companies with a relatively small economic impact are restricted. Important sectors such as energy and care will not be affected by the measures, the spokesperson said.
The Winter Olympics will be held from February 4 to 20.
