PSV captain Marco van Ginkel looked back at the images of Noussair Mazraoui’s winning goal shortly after the lost top match against Ajax (1-2) and then knew enough. “Disgraceful. I can also see that the ball is out,” said Van Ginkel at ESPN, about the controversial moment in the run-up to the goal.
Daley Blind appeared to play the ball over the sideline, but tried to prevent it with a sliding. The linesman did not flag and referee Danny Makkelie therefore let play continue. When Mazraoui hit from a distance, the VAR had to assess the images. The behind-the-scenes video arbiters were unable to determine with any certainty that the ball had crossed the sideline, so the goal stood.

“I’m sick to death of it,” said Van Ginkel, who was replaced by trainer Roger Schmidt after an hour of play at a score of 1-1. “That ball was over the line.” Striker Cody Gakpo called it “a little special” that the goal was not disallowed. “For me the ball was clearly over the line. Even the players of Ajax say that. I actually don’t understand why that goal was not returned. It gives an unfair feeling.”
