EREVAN, 23 JAN – Armenian President Armen Sarkissian has announced his resignation. “I thought for a long time and I decided to resign after four years of active work” because “the president does not have the necessary tools to influence the important foreign and internal policy processes in difficult times for the people and the country”, he said in a Sarkissian note. In Armenia, the office of president lasts seven years and has the symbolic role of guarantor of national unity, while executive power is attributed to the prime minister, who heads the government.
