It’s official: Bayer Leverkusen have secured Sardar Azmoun’s services for next season. The Iranian international, who has been closely associated with the Werkself in previous transfer periods, has signed a contract until 2027.
Due to his expiring contract, Azmoun will move to Leverkusen on a free transfer. The 27-year-old striker has been one of the best players in the Russian league for years, having 85 goals in 104 competitive games for his current club Zenit St. Petersburg.
The transfer likely presages a departure from Lucas Alario, who has never really found a foothold in Germany since arriving in the summer of 2017. However, the Argentine is still tied to the Bundesliga club until 2024.
“We are very happy about this successful transfer. Sardar Azmoun has been one of the top scorers in the Russian league for years. He has won the championship there three times in a row with Zenit, has played regularly in the Champions League and has also demonstrated his international class at the highest level.” said squad planner Simon Rolfes about the transfer.
Azmoun also spoke up: “Being able to play in the Bundesliga soon is incredibly exciting for me. And I am convinced that I will strengthen the team with my footballing qualities.”
