Ziemerink looks over the parking lot with satisfaction. Groups of people walk here and there and you can easily get out of the way with potential new colleagues. “It is a success for the time being, the recruitment day is attracting attention,” says Koen Ziemerink. He is bus travel manager at Brookhuis Bus transport in Oldenzaal and indicates how great the need is. “We have twenty buses and you actually need 40 drivers to be able to drive that bus when it is necessary.”
Bus drivers have to deal with the driving time law and long days behind the wheel is prohibited. “So if you’ve had a school trip during the day and a bus is needed in the evening for transport to and from a party, you should put a different driver on that.”
New full-time employees
Brookhuis has room for 5 new drivers and they are hard to find. Ter Beek Reizen, another coach company from the region, is looking for at least two new full-time employees.
Hans Nolte from Ter Beek Reizen: “Due to the corona crisis, the work came to a complete standstill and more and more drivers started looking for another job. Most of them have found one and they apparently like it, because they stay there. picks up again, then we need new drivers to meet the demand.” Ter Beek Reizen is currently looking for two permanent employees behind the wheel.
‘Riding again in spring’
Koen Ziemerink thinks that the coach companies will have a problem in the spring. “It depends on the relaxation, but we assume that we can run again in April, May and June. Then there is the challenge of having enough drivers. There is a lot of uncertainty because we are a seasonal company.”
That is why six coach companies in Twente have joined forces. A recruitment day should introduce interested parties to the profession. 24 trial lessons were offered. Each company has two coaches and a number of staff members who can inform participants. You can also take a ride with a training vehicle.
“Everyone has been in a coach at some point. Whether it is a school trip, company outing, sports competition or bus holiday. And it would be a great pity if we soon have that bus, but no driver,” says Ziemerink.
