PAVIA DI UDINE. An 18-year-old boy, Lorenzo Parelli, from Castions di Strada, died on the afternoon of Friday 21 January following an accident at work at the Burimec office in Lauzacco (Pavia di Udine). According to a very early reconstruction, the boy (who was in the company for a school-work project), for reasons yet to be ascertained, was hit by a metal bar.
The young man, born in 2003 and a student of the Bearzi institute in Udine, writes Messaggero Veneto, was promptly rescued by the 118 staff, assisted by the firefighters and carabinieri of the Palmanova Company, but every attempt was in vain.
The area of the tragedy has been cordoned off and will be seized to try to establish any third party liability. The head office of the company, which operates in the metal carpentry sector, is located in Buttrio, while the Lauzacco plant, where the drama took place, deals exclusively with lamination
“As a regional administration we gather around the parents, relatives and friends of the young man who died at work in Lauzacco while he was finishing his internship.”
The governor Massimiliano Fedriga and the regional councilor for work Alessia Rosolen said this, having learned the news of the death. “It is incomprehensible – Fedriga and Rosolen declared – how episodes of this gravity can still occur today”.
“At this moment, however – added the two exponents of the regional council – the immeasurable pain suffered by the family requires everyone to respect a respectful silence, waiting for the competent authorities to reconstruct the exact dynamics of what happened”.
«A fact of unprecedented gravity, unworthy for a civilized country, the death at work of a student of just 18 years. An internship in a company should guarantee the future of a young person, not lead to death. There are no words to comment on this horrible tragedy ». The general secretary of the CISL, Luigi Sbarra, wrote on Twitter.
Dismay also in the institutional sphere. Education Minister Bianchi spoke of an unacceptable tragedy: «The death of an 18-year-old boy during an internship experience causes deep pain. Accidents like this are as unacceptable as any death at work is unacceptable. The internship must be a life experience. I express my deepest condolences and closeness to the family. We must put all our commitment, as institutions, to work more forcefully so that episodes like this do not happen again ”.
And other representatives of the trade unions make their voices heard and point the finger at the approximation with which school-work alternation systems are often managed. “We express deep sorrow for what happened in Lauzacco” say in a note, the confederal secretary of the CGIL Rossana Dettori and the general secretary of the Flc CGIL Francesco Sinopoli.
“To the condolences that we express as the national CGIL and the FLC CGIL for a horrible death of a young boy, is joined – continue Dettori and Sinopoli – the indignation at the fact that the old alternation continues to be used, now called with another acronym , to engage students in activities that clearly appear to be unpaid work and often with poor security levels ».
For Dettori and Sinopoli “this very sad story confirms the claims we have been carrying out for years: we ask for the repeal of the rules on the mandatory alternation now PCTO introduced by Law 107. The mandatory nature has entailed the multiplication of experiences and activities, not only detached from their educational path, but often improvised, of poor quality, which in many cases take the form of real free work without any educational intention ». «It’s time to say enough. Words – Dettori and Sinopoli conclude – are no longer sufficient, it is necessary that everyone, starting from the Ministry of Education, takes on their responsibilities and makes consequent choices ».
Bewildered, saddened and close to the deceased boy’s family, even the leaders of the school that the young man attended. «The educational community of the Bearzi of Udine expresses” the deepest condolences “to the family of Lorenzo Parelli. All Bearzi is experiencing this tragedy with immense pain. Lorenzo was attending the 4th year in the industrial mechanics sector, in the dual path of our Bearzi Vocational Training Center and had recently come of age. He had already carried out various internship experiences in the company – writes Don Lorenzo Teston, Director of the Bearzi Salesian Institute – on Monday he would return to the Center to continue his training. From the visits made by the tutor for the company internship, Lorenzo showed that he appreciated the experience, so much so that he dreamed of a future in that working environment. We want to pray and entrust Lorenzo and his family to St. John Bosco in this tragic circumstance ».
In this moment of “great consternation and pain – continues the note from the director of the Institute – we want to remember Lorenzo through his passion for work and his training, his joie de vivre and the desire to build his future working and professional in the mechanical sector “.
