In the quest for even more seating comfort on the motorcycle, BMW has patented a width-adjustable saddle. The mechanics behind the system are as simple as they are smart.
It’s an old problem: During a long day in the saddle, your butt starts to protest at some point. There are all kinds of recipes through aftermarket accessories to prevent an irritated rear, while motorcycle manufacturers themselves respond to this with modified saddles or their own accessories. Height-adjustable saddles have long ceased to be a novelty. Yet something new will be added, because BMW is playing with the idea of introducing a width-adjustable saddle on the market. A leaked patent shows a supposedly manually operated system with adjustment options for two or even three different saddle widths. The actual pad is rotatably mounted on the substructure and can be made wider at the rear, nothing seems to change when it is connected to the tank. It is not yet known how BMW intends to shape this in practice, but a system with wings and a ‘filler’ in between is conceivable, for example. To be continued, no doubt, or not….
