Solid Go Ahead Eagles floors Heerenveen and reach the KNVB Cup quarter-finals

It was, as often this season, Inigo Cordoba who took Go Ahead Eagles by the hand. Via a smooth attack, captain Luuk Brouwers managed to put the Spaniard in position after fifteen minutes to head the 0-1 against the ropes.

Noppert asserts itself

Yet that was slightly against the ratio, because just before that goalkeeper Andries Noppert, who takes care of the cup matches at Go Ahead, stopped Anthony Musaba from scoring with a clever reflex. After the opening goal of the Deventers, Noppert had to act again when Rodney Kongolo got the ball from close range and found the Frisian in his way.

The closing post of Go Ahead Eagles managed to distinguish itself in the first half and also defused the next chance for Heerenveen, via Musaba. Without a frivolous game, Kees van Wonderen’s formation made a solid impression in Heerenveen. After the break, Go Ahead hardly had any problems with the home team and the ranks were kept closed from a well-organized defense. The visitors themselves came out dangerous a few times, but there were no great opportunities for the time being.

Rommens hit the post

Still, Go Ahead got chances to decide the game early. Lidberg’s shot was diverted and went into the side net. Ten minutes before the end, Phillipe Rommens was able to fire on the Heerenveen goal after a quick counterattack, but his placed shot hit the post out of reach of Mous.

In the end, the mediocre Heerenveen was unable to force a significant offensive and as a result it remained 0-1 in Friesland. Go Ahead Eagles thus qualifies, just like in the 2019/2020 season, for the quarterfinals of the KNVB Cup.
