1. FC Köln bid farewell to the DFB Cup after a thriller on penalties with a curious ending. Against HSV, Florian Kainz became a big unlucky man in the penalty shootout. As the last shooter, the Austrian slipped and hit the ball twice with his kicking and standing leg. Although the ball went into the goal, the goal didn’t count.
While HSV is in the quarter-finals, Effzeh unfortunately missed a great cup chance.
Unlucky Florian Kainz:
“I already had a bad feeling. I felt myself slipping away. The way the ball went in looked weird too. The referee told me straight away that it had been checked. It’s a difficult story for me personally, but I’ll be able to deal with it. It’s very bitter for the team that we didn’t reward ourselves for the effort. We never gave up and eventually equalized. We have to finish the game now, but of course the night won’t be nice.”
FC-Coach Steffen Baumgart:
“Congratulations to HSV on progressing. We had very good chances to score that we didn’t take. HSV stuck with it and had very good chances ourselves. Whoever scores the first goal is usually the winner. But we stuck with it and deserved the penalty shootout. I haven’t experienced leaving there with two contacts either. But that’s part of it.“
HSV-Coach Tim Walter:
“It was difficult for us to get in because Cologne play football very intensively. Despite this, the lads persevered. We played courageously and got through a few situations. If you don’t play courageously here, you go under. It was an open game in the second half and brutally intense from both sides. So it made sense that it went to extra time and then penalties. We were the happier winners, but we deserved it.”
Jonah Hector:
“We were no longer able to exert pressure and win the ball more. HSV did well and put us under pressure early on. It was a similar game tactically. Then they neutralized each other a bit. The six changes weren’t too much of a risk, we had enough chances to win the game. We went over 120 minutes and unfortunately didn’t win on penalties.”
Marvin Schwäbe:
“The fact that the rule ended up being like this is very annoying for us today. The referee felt hesitant and then suddenly he was very sure. It might have been the easiest year to go far. But we have to look ahead and see We’re very good mentally, the coaches are adapting well. Just because we’ve lost twice now doesn’t mean we lower our heads.”
Benno Schmitz:
“I haven’t seen the penalty on TV. The referee said it was checked and there were two contacts. Then the penalty will probably not be repeated. The situation is very rare. That’s why it’s bitter. We really wanted to go on We had a lot of chances and didn’t score in regular time. Then we got the goal straight away, but we didn’t give up and we deservedly went to penalties. But somehow it just wasn’t meant to be.”
