On January 13 last, Ukrainian government agencies warned about a cyber attack that temporarily took the sites of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other agencies of the country out of service.
As indicated by Microsoft a few hours ago in a publication on its website, the Microsoft Threat Intelligence Center detected that the attack on websites was only a distraction since the real plan was to infect computers with destructive malware, which was disguised as ransomware and is designed to render the devices it attacks inoperable.

The malware overwrites the Master Boot Record (MBR), which as many of you may know, is what tells the hard drive how to load the operating system, and then leaves a ransom note on victims’ systems that says: “Your hard drive has been damaged. In case you want to recover all the hard drives of your organization, you need to pay us $10k via bitcoin wallet”

While the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was operating, the attackers left the message: “Ukrainians, be afraid and prepare for the worst. All your personal data has been made public” and although the attack has not been claimed and Microsoft indicates that they have not yet identified any group behind it, the message has generated some alarms since everything has happened during moments of political tension where Ukraine accuses Russia of having plans to destabilize the country and prepare a military invasion.
