Cinema Massimo proposes the retrospective “A relative truth. Asghar Farhadi’s cinema”. From 10 to 28 January a retrospective dedicated to the Iranian director Asghar Farhadi on the occasion of the release on January 5 of his latest film A hero.
Made in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna Foundation, the retrospective includes all of the director’s films, since his 2003 debut with Dancing in the Dust a Everybody knows of 2018. Asghar Farhadi’s films focus on human relationships and investigate the most unpredictable parts of the human soul, looking for an absolute truth that only certain images, certain silences and a few gestures at times are able to touch.

Nader and his wife Simin are about to divorce. They have obtained the expatriation permit but the man does not want to leave his sick father. Simin leaves the house and goes to live with her parents while the daughter stays with the father. The situation worsens and they will all have to reconsider their positions. The result is a rather complex, stinging and not very auspicious family portrait.

At the age of sixteen, A’la killed his girlfriend and was sentenced to death for this. Now that he is eighteen, he is transferred from the juvenile prison to a real penitentiary. He must serve a death sentence, but the victim’s father can commute the sentence to life imprisonment, with his forgiveness. A rarefied love story also complicates things.
