In Spider-Man: No Way Home we find most of the villains seen in the Marvel superhero movies before Tom Holland’s performances. Already the trailers anticipated the different looks for some enemies and there were many theories of the fans, especially that relating to the Six Claims, which then did not occur. Let’s find out in detail how the villains of the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man have changed in the latest Marvel Studios film in collaboration with Sony.
New costumes and welcome returns in Spider-Man: No Way Home
In the review by Spider-Man: No Way Home I underlined how the film represents a sort of Endgame for the entire Arrampicamuri saga at the cinema, with the return of all the protagonists and also of the most beloved villains. Among these, let’s start with my favorite: Norman Osborn / Goblin, played by Willem Dafoe, which reprises his role from the Sam Raimi trilogy. Scientist and CEO of Oscorp, he takes on a dual personality after a laboratory accident that gives him extraordinary powers. In the last film he perfectly resumes his psychological traits and his fighting skills, changes the costume slightly.
Compared to Spider-Man from 2002, Green Goblin has a more ruined armor, with the purple hood of a sweatshirt and without the iconic helmet: with his face uncovered Willem Dafoe manages to be even more expressive. In this regard, costume designer Sanja Milković Hays said: “We needed to respect the originals, but at the same time give them the aesthetics that the new generations expect of us. So we had to update their looks, since the technology is very different “.
The costume designer then focused on the Doctor Octopus look, quite different from the original: “The original sweater was greenish and brown. We made it greener with the jacket, which we made more snug instead. The idea was to make him look like a modern-day villain. Furthermore, it was essential for us to make sure that the actors did not think at all about the costumes “.
The original green sweater he talks about is that of the comics because in the 2004 film he has the chest more exposed under the jacket, compared to the crew neck sweater he wears now. Furthermore, in Spider-Man: No Way Homethe tentacles are not present, but they are made entirely in CGI. Alfred Molina returns to play the excellent scientist with four artificial tentacles fused to his body after an accident in the second film of the Raimi trilogy; arrives in the universe of the MCU while he is on the verge of killing his Peter Parker, that is, before “repenting”, as we saw in the finale of Spider-Man 2.
However it is Max Dillon / Electro, played by Jamie Foxx, to win the villain improvement award: the Lizard himself underlines the change, from an awkward nerd to a powerful “electric man”. Max is an electrical engineer who adores the Webweave and after an accident he gets mind-blowing electrical powers in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – The Power of Electro in 2014. In the final battle of the last film the star sparks around the face make up the mask of the villain in the comics.
Finally, we also find Thomas Haden Church as Flint Marko / Sandman, already interpreted in Spider-Man 3 (2007) and Rhys Ifans as Curt Connors / Lizard, gives The Amazing Spider-Man (2012). It seems that the actors have only voiced their characters when they are transformed and no new scenes have been shot with them; in some cases recycled scenes from previous films were used.
Indeed, let’s see Sandman in human form for a short time and particularly when Peter Parker heals Sandman: in that sequence the scene where Marko crumbles after falling into a pool of water was reused in Spider-Man 3, but in the latest Marvel movie, his hand comes together.
In No Way Home we see a completely transformed Lizard, but not very incisive for the entire plot. Again, when Peter Parker treats Doctor Connors, a scene from the first film with Andrew Garfield was recycled.: the lizard loses its scales, its tail and its right hand just like in that film, but the angle of the scene is different, possibly resulting from a cut scene.
It would be worth reviewing all the Spider-Man movies, including those with Andrew Garfield. Click here to buy the 7 Blu-ray box on Amazon.
