The Dutch track sprinters have been named Sports Team of the Year for the second time. Harrie Lavreysen, Jeffrey Hoogland, Roy van den Berg and Matthijs Büchli confirmed their longstanding supremacy in the team sprint last summer in Japan, by also winning Olympic gold. The track cyclists were also chosen as Sports Team of the Year at the 2018 Sportgala.
The team sprinters were preferred over the hockey players, who won the European Championship in their own country this year and took gold in Tokyo, and the rowers of the doubles. Abe Wiersma, Dirk Uittenbogaard, Koen Metsemakers and Tone Wieten gave the Netherlands the first gold of the Games in Japan on the rowing course.
Two years ago, the prize for Sports Team of the Year went to the handball players, who had won the world title a few days earlier.
