The mother of the new world champion reveals how she lived the afternoon of the Abu Dhabi GP. And tells a hilarious phone call
From the disappointment for a clearly lost play-off to the wildest joy after a heart attack last lap. The 2021 World Cup ends with the triumph of Max Verstappen, the first Dutchman in history to be world champion in F1. Immediately after the throbbing finale of the Abu Dhabi GP, the new world champion thought of a special person: mother Sophie Kumpen. As her mother said in an interview with the Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, Max made her a surprise by contacting her by phone, complete with teasing.

Sophie has a racing past and is well acquainted with racing dynamics. This did not prevent her from experiencing the final in Abu Dhabi with great tension. His joy is irrepressible: “Only now are we starting to make it happen: my son is F1 world champion. I screamed and cried. Max was a lion because, it must be admitted, Hamilton was the strongest in the race. The angels helped us ”. Immediately after the GP, here is the phone call from Max: “I was pleased to hear him even though he was a little upset. The first thing he asked me? How many times have I gone to the bathroom during the race … ”.

Ms. Verstappen was born in Belgium and still has many friends there. Some of them kept her company in front of the screen, together with their families, in the most intense GP of recent years. Precisely this closeness between Belgium and the Netherlands was surprising: “It’s amazing what triggered this success. We started following the race together with almost the whole neighborhood. People came from all over. Belgians and Dutch together, all for Max. Something truly unique ”. An even more special victory.
