BVB boss Hans-Joachim Watzke is the new DFL supervisory board chairman. As the German Football League officially confirmed on Tuesday afternoon, the 62-year-old will succeed Peter Peters.
From February 11, Watzke Peters will follow, who will step down from his DFL offices because of his DFB presidential candidacy.
According to the outgoing DFL boss Christian Seifert, Watzke was proposed by seven club representatives as the new supervisory board boss. At the general assembly of the DFL in Frankfurt he was elected by the 36 clubs of the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga with a large majority.
“I’ve successfully defended myself against something like this for 17 years. Now I’ve been caught at a weak point. If you get 32 out of 34 club votes in a secret ballot, that’s a very, very good result.”, said Watzke about the election result.
“We have to make football shine again. I feel a very great responsibility and I hope to live up to it. Before the league, I sketched out how I would like it to be and gave a few keywords about various things relating to my position is, “said Watzke at the PK after the DFL general meeting. In his position as head of the DFL supervisory board, Watzke also holds the position of 1st Vice President of the DFB.
