The goal scored by Arsenal player, Emile Smith Rowe during the match against Manchester United in the 2021/22 Premier League match, did receive criticism because it was considered invalid after seeing David De Gea, lying in pain when his partner, Fred stepped on his leg.
However, Paul Scholes as a MU legend did not want to defend De Gea. The man who now works as a football pundit, even criticized the actions of the Spanish goalkeeper.
According to him, De Gea should have woken up quickly and endured the pain to deny Smith Rowe’s shot, rather than lying down for a long time and expecting the referee to disallow the goal.
“David de Gea’s actions are disgraceful. You have to protect your goal, you have to do whatever it takes to stop the opponent’s goal,” Scholes said.
“I don’t think there’s much wrong with it. De Gea should be there, guarding the net at all times. That doesn’t look bad to me.”
Luckily the incident was a bit forgotten from the MU side, considering they could still end the match with a narrow 3-2 victory.
