It will not get colder in the coming days, but rather warmer. During the day it can just be about 10 degrees, at night slightly above freezing, says meteorologist Marc de Jong of Buienradar. “We are still in the cold air now, that will change next night.”
This is the sunniest day of the week
It is not that the weather will be very nice in the coming days. There is quite a bit of rain and the wind can sometimes be quite strong. Today is the most beautiful day, De Jong knows. “This is the sunniest day of the week. At the end of the week the weather will be a bit colder.”
So no spectacular winter weather this week, the question remains as to why this was suddenly the case last week. The snow that remained was very unexpected even for meteorologists. According to De Jong, the snow still remained in a few places because it snowed more intensively than expected. That had two consequences:
- The snow carried cold air down from a great height. “At an altitude of about 5 kilometers it was 37 degrees below zero, so very cold air.” And this cooled the relatively warm soil extra, allowing the snow to remain.
- Because of that very cold air, the snow was not converted into wet snow or rain. “Everything that falls from a cloud starts as snow. When the air below is above zero, it becomes rain or wet snow. So now it remained snow.” The increased amount of snow further cooled the ground, so that the snow in some places did not melt and formed a snow cover of a few centimeters.
And that happens often enough, but actually the conditions were not such that a layer of snow was expected. But it did come. And that made for very nice pictures:
