Bayer Leverkusen has reported back impressively in the Bundesliga title fight. In front of empty ranks, the Werkself rolled over RB Leipzig in phases and deservedly won 3-1. Shortly before the end, RB Leipzig missed a penalty.
Tore:
1:0 Wirtz (21.)
2:0 Diaby (34.)
2:1 Silva (62.)
3:1 Frimpong (64.)
The Werkself set the tone from the start in front of empty ranks in Leipzig. After just eight minutes it was the first time in the goal of the Saxons, but Diaby’s goal was withdrawn due to a narrow offside position.
Leipzig, which made people sit up and take notice during the week with a 5-0 demonstration in the Champions League against Club Brugge, did not find its way at all against the Werkself. Still suffering from the Corona, the Saxons did not offer anything on Sunday evening, striker Brian Brobbey, who celebrated his starting eleven debut in the Bundesliga, was replaced after just 43 minutes – maximum penalty! But it could also have hit storm partner Andre Silva, who was just as ineffective as Brobbey.
Leverkusen, on the other hand, lively played their tempo football and rewarded themselves after 21 minutes: Florian Wirtz closed Palacios’ beautiful passport ice cold to 1-0. Almost 13 minutes later, Moussa Diaby plucked a long ball from Jonathan Tah out of the air, put the leather in front of him from 20 meters away with the acceptance and increased with a full shot to 2-0. Well deserved.
On the side of the home side, the formally strong Christopher Nkunku had to get the coals out of the fire. With a nice cross (and his 21st goal participation in 19 games), the French staged the pale Andre Silva after an hour, who scored 2-1 in a top striker-style. However, the goal was ineffective: just two minutes later, Jeremie Frimpong increased to 3-1.
For Leipzig it was a stick-out shortly before the end: Substitute Dominik Szoboszlai missed a penalty kick and hit the post. That would have allowed the Red Bulls to come close again and take at least one point in a weak game. In the league, RBL continues to stand still in the middle of the table, while the Werkself are impressively reporting back in the title fight.
