Rapid action is needed to meet the massive demand for student housing in Enschede. That is why we are working on two projects: one for temporary housing and one for permanent residence. Today, the municipality of Enschede, University of Twente, Housing Association De Veste and Housing Corporation Domijn put their signatures.
There will be 230 so-called flexible housing units on the Witbrakensweg, which students should be able to move into in February 2022. The foundation has already started. They are residential units of 28 square meters, with a private shower, toilet, kitchen and front door. Priority is given to students with an urgent application. The houses will be used for student housing for at least the next seven years.
In addition, work is being done on the construction of houses for permanent housing. There is a plan to develop additional student residences on the university campus, with consideration being given to about 90 residences on the Boulevard or elsewhere on campus. Construction is expected to start in 2022 and the homes are expected to be completed in 2023.
Finally, the idea is to realize a residential concept on Hengelosestraat. There must be room for young professionals, PhD students and employees of companies on campus. The expected start of this project, a residential and workplace with approximately 200 homes, is in 2024.
‘Proud of Twente collaboration’
Alderman Jeroen Diepemaat: “I am proud that the Twente collaboration, with the connecting role of the Twente Board, and the support from the Ministry, means that we can solve an acute housing problem for a large group of students in a short time. never shown anywhere in the country before. And of course I hope that eventually we can permanently bind these talents to our region.”
