The municipality of Haaksbergen is expected to have an amount of 1.9 million euros over the year 2021. While the 2021 Budget still took into account a surplus of one ton. This is apparent from the 2021 End-of-Year Report. That is good news for the municipality, which was placed under preventive supervision by the province in September 2019 due to the poor financial situation.
As in previous years, the emphasis of municipal policy was also on recovery. “Implementation of the financial recovery plan and a tight financial regime have helped us,” said Alderman for Finance Louis Koopman. “Just like the sale of municipal land. But most of all, we benefit from the higher General Payment we received from the State this year.” He immediately adds a comment. “We must continue to work on sound financial conditions!”
It is the second year in a row that the municipality of Haaksbergen has come up with more positive figures than previously thought. Last year there was still a deficit of 3.5 tons, but a deficit of 1.2 million had been taken into account.
The municipality of Haaksbergen has been working on improvements for some time now. Getting your finances in order is part of that. Haaksbergen recently presented a balanced budget for next year and has almost two million euros left over the past year.
Does that mean that the municipality is financially healthy and no longer needs to be monitored extra by the province? No, says Koopman about this. “We will therefore continue to add one million euros annually to the General Reserve in the coming years.”
The fact that the year-end figures are turning out so positively is on the one hand lucky, but also has to do with the policy of the municipality. A bit of luck is the extra nine tons that the municipality received from the government. In addition, the coronavirus has reduced spending in various areas. For example, fewer people had to be taken to daycare.
Furthermore, just like last year, the sale of land generated extra money.
This year too, the coronavirus had a huge impact on residents, companies, associations and organizations. The municipality was able to compensate for lost income with money from the government. The municipality actually acted as a conduit towards sports facilities and cultural institutions, for example. There is still 650,000 euros of corona money available. The municipality will keep that amount in reserve for a while in case new requests for assistance arise.
Alderman Koopman satisfied with the financial year. “The municipality of Haaksbergen is getting better and better. Let’s continue that line and continue to aim for a financially and organizationally healthy municipality, also in the longer term.”
