The police in Zwolle arrested the thirteen people for various reasons. Some disobeyed a police order, others were in possession of fireworks and had no ID on them. A police spokesman said it was otherwise relatively quiet in the city.
Terraces cleaned up
The emergency order was issued because there were signals that people in Zwolle’s city center wanted to protest against the corona measures. For fear of riots, catering entrepreneurs had cleaned up the terraces and put away the furniture as a precaution. Some shopkeepers had also closed their windows.
There was also a lot of police in the city center last night. Here and there there were some small groups of people who were approached by the police. A group of about 40 to 50 corona protesters were on their way to the center, but were stopped by officers and told to leave, the spokesman said.
The authorities also feared riots and disturbances in Drachten. Police had seen calls on social media to gather in various places. Because there was a ‘serious fear’ that ‘serious disorder’ would arise, the mayor announced an emergency ordinance. In the end it seemed to remain calm in Drachten.
They also prepared for riots in Groningen. It was again restless in the city at the beginning of the evening, after rioters had destroyed bus shelters and shop windows the day before. The police tried to keep groups of young people apart yesterday so that they could not come together in one central place, RTV Noord writes.
Officers also stopped passers-by and asked them for identification. Calm returned later in the evening and no one was arrested. As a precaution, catering entrepreneurs had also brought in their terraces here.
The riots started last Friday in Rotterdam. There, the situation got so out of hand that the police decided to target rioters. Seven people were injured and four people suffered gunshot wounds. The mayor of Rotterdam Ahmed Aboutaleb told Jinek last night that the people who were hit are not in mortal danger.
According to the mayor, some of the rioters had ‘really come to make victims’. “They have the idea that they have to fight the police. But there is no extenuating circumstance to want to kill an officer,” Aboutaleb said. A total of 49 people were arrested in the riots.
