After the 1-1 draw between Werder and Schalke, the focus was on the late and very questionable VAR penalty, and on Sunday it heated people’s minds. Nevertheless, the performance of the S04 should not be concealed by this: Once again, it was far too harmless and not well thought out. This harbors dangers for the coming weeks.
Rouven Schröder called it “one of the most blatant mistakes I have ever seen”. Dimitrios Grammozis said (via kicker): “The penalty was an absolute cheek that I’ve never seen it before.” Of course, the focus was on the anger over the questionable penalty, given in stoppage time by Tobias Stieler in conjunction with the video assistant Christian Dingert.
He ensured that the top game in the 2nd Bundesliga between Werder Bremen and Schalke 04 ended in a 1-1 draw. Niclas Füllkrug converted the penalty in the 98th minute very cool and smoothly. A division of points for both teams who would have needed a win to keep up with the top.
Of course, from S04’s point of view, the 911 decision was a huge theater. But there is another problem with it: due to the totally understandable emotionality, nobody spoke about the miners’ performance after the game. Roughly summarized: again you appeared offensively harmless and without a well thought-out plan.
No question, the Gelsenkircheners were able to defend most of the game well. Big chances were hardly allowed at all in the first half, there were no major worries about it. In the second half, Schalke noticeably retreated further, allowing one or the other good chances to score – but still nothing for which the defense would have to be criticized in particular.
The criticism must – again – hit the game in possession. Both from building up the game as well as winning the ball: S04 dribbled partially off, got into potentially dangerous zones, only to then again show the lack of plan that has been observed for months. Important combinations, essential and well thought-out routes, pulling the opponent to enable a deal – again in short supply.
A total of two shots were fired, which then also hit the Werder goal (via Sofascore). This should mean the conclusion of substitute Rodrigo Zalazar and the subsequent header hit by Simon Terodde, who was able to convert the rebound of that shot into his 154th second division goal. That was it already.
Against a Bremen that had extremely turbulent last few days, sent a central defense that was almost thrown together out of necessity and lost the coach ten hours before the final whistle, more has to come around. Of course, the relegated team is one of the best clubs in the league – but given the hoped-for promotion and with this team, the aim must be to be able to take advantage of such circumstances with the opponent.
Once again Grammozis chose the wrong midfield constellation for the starting line-up. Again he bet on Dominick Drexler next to captain Danny Latza, who had another used day. As against Darmstadt, he had to correct this decision by replacing Zalazar. This time already in the second half for Victor Palsson, who had been warned by yellow.
Even Zalazar did not play the stars from the sky, but at least provided a different dynamic and through the one or two won dribbling for important space. He also had this before his graduation, which then led to the S04 hit.
Top game draw as a fitting result – S04 goes into difficult weeks without confidence
The draw was ultimately okay. Neither the royal blue deserved the win, nor did the Bremen team, who ultimately did not succeed in forcing a home win. Nevertheless, the hosts were the better team in terms of play. In addition to the penalty, the way Schalke reappeared was the second disappointment.
Especially since it should not be forgotten that the coaching team can currently draw on the full. No regular player is injured. Salif Sané actually hardly belongs to the team anymore, Michael Langer wouldn’t play and Darko Churlinov, who missed the game with shoulder problems, was at most a substitute option in the end. In view of all these omens, more must come than the justified frustration at the very late and almost free compensation.
These are also not good omen for the next few weeks. Bremen was seen as a kind of preview: the next game days will include FC St. Pauli, 1. FC Nürnberg and HSV. Teams that don’t play significantly worse than Werder – sometimes quite the opposite.
So it was not a game that Schalke can use to take hope into these duels. This realization and the again very mixed performance were not an issue for Schröder, Grammozis and Co. on Saturday evening. The joke penalty should by no means hide this factor, despite all understandable frustration.
