Weee system close to collapse, too many TVs delivered to be disposed of for the new digital terrestrial
The boom in the contributions of old televisions, following the entry into force of the new digital terrestrial standard and the forecasts of further growth in purchases is destined, in the coming weeks, in the absence of a peremptory and extraordinary regulatory intervention, to cause the collection block e recycling of the waste stream concerned.
This is the alarm cry and the request for help contained in the letter sent to the Minister of Ecological Transition by Assoraee (technological waste recovery companies), component of Unicircular file (enterprises of the circular economy), from WEEE coordination center and others Associations of the electrical and electronic equipment chain.
The imminent adoption of the new digital terrestrial standards they tax incentives for scrapping unsuitable products are causing an extraordinary increase in the flow of these waste which registered + 80% compared to the volumes ordinarily managed.
This boom in deliveries to public or private collection points has led to new requests for intervention, both in terms of frequency of collection and points served, which WEEE management system has so far performed with an exceptional organizational effort to ensure the continuity of the service in the best possible way.
However, the system is now close to saturation and the commitment to guarantee the domestic WEEE management service today collides with the operational difficulties of the plants that have to treat them: in the coming weeks, thanks to the sales promotions and the upcoming Christmas holidays, the flows will increase well beyond the storage capacities and those currently authorized for treatment by the plants, which will thus be forced to deny the entry of televisions, consequently leading to the blocking of the whole system, from sale to collection, up to treatment.
For this reason, the Associations and the WEEE CdC they asked in a letter to the Minister of Ecological Transition Roberto Cingolani that, exceptionally and limited to the period deemed necessary, a measure is adopted that allows to temporarily increase the quantities and maximum storage times envisaged for the treatment plants, for the grouping places managed by the distribution and for the municipal collection centers of these waste.
