The 24-year-old German Alexander Zverev has reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals for the third time in his tennis career. The Olympic champion, who was placed third in Turin, was too strong for the Pole Hubert Hurkacz on Thursday: 6-2 6-4. He thus secured second place in the red group and a place in the last four. He previously succeeded in the final tournament of 2018, which he won, and in 2019.
Zverev had to beat Hurkacz on Thursday to continue after his three-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev. It was barely noticeable that the German was under pressure. In the first set he immediately went on to 4-0 and remained dominant after that. His Polish opponent had more defense in the second set, but had no hope of a victory.
Zverev will face the favorite Novak Djokovic, the number 1 in the world ranking, on Saturday. Last summer, he defeated the Serb in Tokyo on his way to Olympic gold. “I know it won’t be easy, but I’m looking forward to it,” Zverev looked ahead. “The atmosphere here is great. It will be even more tingly on Saturday, even better”.
