In one city a lot of noise, on the other side of the province it was mostly quiet. The mandatory catering closure from eight o’clock in the evening raised mixed feelings on Saturday evening. Some cafe visitors understand the tightening, others think it is unjustified that the catering industry is again being seriously affected.
Hundreds of people protested in Zwolle against the tightened corona measures in the catering industry. Catering staff and supporters armed with pans, ladles and a large banner took to the streets for a noise protest. Some pubs there also stayed open longer than eight hours.
“With this protest, we want to achieve that we are one hundred percent compensated for all the damage we incur as a result,” says Michelle Hanekamp of Ensemble Gastro & Bar. “We want to make it clear that our boiling point has been reached and that the measure is really full for us.”
There was no protest in Enschede last night. After seven o’clock it was already a lot quieter than usual on the Oude Markt. Terraces were barely occupied and the guests who were there already left the cafes and restaurants before the mandatory closing time. “It’s not really relaxed tonight,” says one of the guests at restaurant NOVI on the Oude Markt. “You are now looking at your clock all the time because you have to leave on time. You are rushing, that is not good. But I understand the measures. It is a given and we all have to be here together deal with it.”
The fact that they do not protest loudly in Enschede does not mean that they are not disappointed with the measures. “Unfortunately, we can’t do what we are good at now, which is being hospitable,” says Joris Eleveld of NOVI. “The evenings are our best hours, we will probably miss fifty percent of the turnover. Based on that, we will have to switch back very quickly.”
The story quickly circulated through the Zwolle catering app group last night that the noise protest in the city had had an effect, because the catering industry would be fully compensated. Mayor Snijders nuanced that story later in the evening, because this will only be discussed with outgoing minister Grapperhaus on Tuesday evening.
