Tesla gets a big slap from BMW CEO Oliver Zipse. According to the German, Tesla is not one of the premium car manufacturers of this world.
“Where we differ from each other is our standards of quality and reliability,” Zipse said at an event yesterday. “We have different ambitions in terms of customer satisfaction. Tesla is not quite part of the premium segment.” According to Zipse, the American EV builder is currently growing strongly due to price reductions, but ‘BMW would never do that’.

It’s not the first time BMW and Zipse have ridiculed Tesla. Earlier this year, the CEO wondered whether Tesla would be able to maintain its high position in the EV world, as more and better competitors from other car brands appear on the market.

BMW itself is in any case busy expanding the electric range. After the i3 it took no less than seven whole years before a new EV came from Munich (the iX3), but now things are going fast. The BMW iX is already driving around on the Dutch asphalt, while the electric i4 will also make its appearance soon.

Electric 7 series
Next year, BMW will also be showing two new and important electric models. It concerns the i7 (an electric 7-series) and the iX1. As is the case with the iX3, that will be a regular X1 with a fully electric powertrain.

At the same time, BMW is one of the few brands that has not yet announced when it will go fully electric. Other premium brands, such as Bentley, Audi, Jaguar and Mercedes-Benz, have already put a date on that turning point. BMW also knows that the future is electric, but has not yet set a date on when every Bavarian car will be a fully electric one. After all, the manufacturer is also very active in China and the United States, where combustion engines will live even longer than in Europe.
