The board of the Dutch Triathlon Bond resigns immediately. The reason is a critical report on social security published on Tuesday. The union states that a new government must be able to start “without the burden of the past”. The researchers have advised the union based on their findings to intervene immediately to bring about a cultural change. In October, there were already reports that abuses had taken place in the summit for years, such as physical neglect.
Last year, at the urging of a number of top athletes and the Centrum Veilige Sport Nederland, the association decided to launch a study. This shows that there was cross-border behavior, group formation, exclusion, gossip and bullying behavior within the union’s training center. Some athletes have stopped training at the complex and they dedicate their departure to “intercourse”. The exclusion and gossip is in some cases “packed with humor, but in some cases takes on more serious forms”, according to the researchers.
Victims feel that the guidance does not intervene sufficiently or even aggravates the situation. The study shows that even within the Olympic selection of triathletes there is talk of “undesirable behavior, tensions and escalations”. In addition, the athletes would “distrust each other” motives and integrity “, so there was little room for criticism. This caused “polarization and hardening” within the group.
To improve the situation, the researchers make twelve recommendations, such as a better relationship between men and women in the coaching team. They also recommend hiring a confidant.
It has previously been shown that young talents in the gymnastics world have also suffered emotional and physical damage as a result of intimidation, diminution and negation. Research has shown that the unsafe sports climate, especially among former top gymnasts, has left deep traces. In April, NOC-NSF ruled on the Dutch gymnastics world. Together with the gymnastics league, the sports dome paid 5,000 euros in damages per victim.
