Anime is immensely popular and different companies want to bring their stories to a wider audience. Part of this has been with the development of projects that adapt these stories with real actors. One of those who will receive this treatment in the future is Yu Yu Hakusho.
In the 2021 edition of Netflix’s Japan Festival, the company confirmed that the live-action adaptation of Yu Yu Hakusho still stands. In fact, it already has a tentative launch window: December 2023.
Thus, we are just over 2 years away from the live action series of Yu Yu Hakusho. Unfortunately, that is one of the few things we know about this production and there are no details about its cast, plot or duration yet.
What is a fact is that Kazutaka Sakamoto, director of content acquisition of Netflix will be the executive producer of Yu Yu Hakusho. We also know that Robot Communications (Parasyte) is involved with the project.
While making a good live action adaptation shouldn’t be impossible, it’s not easy either. The proof is in a slew of adaptations ranging from creepy to mediocre. This is why the fans of Yu Yu Hakusho surely this adaptation is taken with reservations.
Recall that in the world of live action adaptations, Netflix has a mixed history pulling bad. His series of Death Note was considered rubbish by many, while their attempts to adapt Fullmetal Alchemist and Bleach they passed without much pain or glory. We’ll see how it goes with Cowboy Bebop.

What is it Yu Yu Hakusho?
In case you don’t know Yu Yu Hakusho is a manga created by Yoshihiro Togashi, which was adapted into an acclaimed anime that aired from 1992 to 1995.
Yu Yu Hakusho tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a rebellious teenager who, after trying to save a child, is run over and dies. His act was heroic and something unusual for him, and that is why in the afterlife they do not know what to do with his soul. After all, he doesn’t deserve to go to heaven, but hell would be an unfair place for a hero. Given this, they decide to give him the opportunity to return to his body, as long as he works as a supernatural detective.
