Next Thursday is the eleventh of the eleventh, the official kick-off of the carnival season. In the south of the country, the associations have already decided to cancel the carnival parties, due to the rising corona infections and hospital admissions.
In Overijssel, for the time being, all carnival parties “just” go on. For example, in the Oldenzaal, ‘the carnival town above the great rivers’, the kick-off of the new carnival season is planned for next Saturday.
Worrying about parties
“I do worry about that”, says Den Boon, who is also chairman of the board of Medisch Spectrum Twente (MST) in Enschede. “First of all, I can very well imagine people going to parties. But it does not take away that we are worried. We are not talking about it, but we do have an interest to serve. That interest is that the the influx of patients to the hospitals is not increasing further. “
Den Boon sees a great risk of contamination in the large-scale festivals that will take place in the near future. “At outdoor events, the chances of people eventually getting sick and having to go to the hospitals are still relatively small. But at large-scale parties, it can only be that there are infections that lead to illness.”
“I think it’s a problem for all of us,” said the hospital manager:

Call for responsibility
The care manager appeals to the responsibility of the carnival associations. “My advice is to reflect on the large-scale in-house events. If we let it go again, the consequence will be that there will be an influx of patients to the hospitals again.”
According to Den Boon, the hospitals in Twente are already full of corona patients. “Care is already a heavy burden, we can no longer make it. To let it go means that it is again at the expense of people who need planned care,” he says, referring to non-coronary care, such as hip surgery. then have to be dismissed.
In the ROAZ Twente-Achterhoek, the Twente hospitals and other care institutions that deal with acute care are represented.
Coronahotspots
Twente is currently mainly a ‘receiving region’. This means that hospitals MST and ZGT mainly receive corona patients from outside the region. “The corona hotspots are located in Zwolle, the west and in Limburg. But because we distribute the care in the Netherlands equally, we are equally burdened. We are at our max”, said Den Boon.
Upon request, the Iceland Safety Region does not indicate any reason not to allow large-scale events in the near future. “But the eleventh of the eleventh is not as big an event in Iceland as in the south of the country,” said a spokesman. A spokesperson for the Regional Consultative Acute Care Chain (ROAZ) region Zwolle agrees with the words of Jan den Boon, chairman of the Regional Consultative Acute Care Chain (ROAZ) Euregio, in Twente and part of the Achterhoek.
