The Tesla Model Y finally arrives on the Italian market almost two and a half years after its presentation. This is the most compact crossover of the range, which ideally corresponds to the Model 3, while the Model X corresponds to the Model S. It is the car with which Tesla will increase its volumes again, after having touched the 500,000 units produced in 2020, it could close 2021 in the order of 700,000 / 800,000. But what the precise contribution of the Model Y will be to the budget of the Californian manufacturer, we will know only in a few weeks. What we do know for sure is that S / Xs now account for only 1% of Tesla’s global sales. Returning to Model Y, there are two versions to choose from: Long Range and Performance. The first, the protagonist of our test, is already available, those who prefer the second will have to wait until the first months of 2022. Both have an electric motor for each axle and four-wheel drive without propeller shaft.
The Long Range has 351 hp (440 peak), goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 5 seconds and reaches 217 km / h, the Performance rises to 462 hp (513 peak) and 241 km / h going down to 3.7 seconds in the stop shot. In the WLTP-approved range, however, the less powerful 507 km is slightly ahead compared to 480, globally about 100 less than the lighter and more aerodynamic Model 3. Compared to this, the Model Y is 6 cm longer (475 cm total), wider than 7 and higher than 18, with the mass reaching 2 tons. The interior volume increases accordingly: the luggage compartment capacity is 600 liters and with the third row of seats (optional) you get to 7 seats. In general, the space on board is generous and the panoramic glass roof increases the brightness. To enter there is no key, but a card or smartphone with the dedicated app, which is also used to connect to the car by operating the remote unlocking and pre-conditioning, or by activating position detection or limit mode. speed (useful in case of loans).
Here opens a separate chapter, in which Model Y takes the concept of hi-tech to levels unknown for other brands. The interior is radically minimalist: in addition to the two wheels on the steering wheel and the two levers next to it, there are only the buttons to open the doors and the windows. Everything else passes through the 15 “horizontal touchscreen: infotainment, air conditioning, navigator, instrumentation, stereo, etc. It is currently the best device on the market, both in terms of operating speed and precision and touch sensitivity. To use it at its best, however, it takes a bit of getting used to and you have to be careful not to get distracted by navigating between menus and windows, also because Tesla has chosen to trust the driver and not to disable a series of gadgets, such as Karaoke and video games, when the car is in Speaking of motorbikes, Model Y is capable of pick-ups and accelerations closer to the world of two wheels than to that of 4. The power comes so instantaneously that at first it can even blow you away.
It is necessary to learn how to dose the accelerator with millimeter precision, even in the release phase since the energy recovery is consistent and can no longer be adjusted on two levels, as until recently it happened on the other Tesla, but it varies depending on the pace. Model Y has an almost sporty feel, with a composed set-up – there is no electronic suspension option – and very direct steering, too much considering the type of car. Comfort, on the other hand, is of the highest level, thanks to Cx of 0.23 which cancels any rustle. Overall quality also seems to have grown over the Model 3, with the interior better assembled and free from any creaking. Autopilot is standard, then there are the 3,800 and 7,500 euro steps: the first adds lane change and automatic parking, integration with the navigator and the Summon mode, which makes the car exit the parking lot from alone. The second includes the management of stops, traffic lights and preparation for level 3 autonomous driving, which in Italy is not yet legal.
