54-year-old R. Kelly has been incarcerated since 2019. He had to appear in New York on a laundry list of charges, including sexual abuse, extortion, human trafficking and bribery. The jury found him guilty on all counts of the charge.
Girls and women recruited
The singer would also have had a business that not only had to promote his music, but also recruited girls and women. The girls and also a boy would have been blackmailed with explicit images.
Stories and allegations of sexual abuse have haunted Robert Sylvester Kelly, as his full name is, since the beginning of his career in the 1990s.
The lawsuit was initiated after R. Kelly was discredited in 2017 after a detailed article on the website Buzzfeed. In it, he was accused of locking up six women in some sort of sex cult.
He had taken control of them after they approached him for help with their musical career. According to the article, he determined what they ate, wore and how they should behave during sex. Kelly denied the allegations.
‘This was what he wanted’
Also the documentary series Surviving R. Kelly from 2019 triggered a lot. It also gave an insight into the singer’s practices. “I never fully recovered from it,” says one of the victims in it.
It also became clear that the people around R. Kelly were involved in the case. “This was what he wanted so we had to make sure he got it,” said a former tour manager.
Kelly will not be sentenced until May next year. According to a reporter for The New York Times, the singer sat unmoved in the room when the verdict was pronounced. His face could not be seen through a mask.
The singer previously said he was not guilty and he called this an attempt by the victims to generate attention for themselves.
Lawsuits have been filed against him in several states. In other cases, R. Kelly is also suspected of child abuse and forging ID in order to marry a minor.
