Nostalgics and football romantics will get their money’s worth again on this second Champions League matchday: among the 16 premier class games that will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday across the entire continent, there are again some real delicacies.
Things got off to a really good start on Tuesday evening: Paris St. Germain vs Manchester City (9 p.m.). Concentrated Arab financial strength meets in this prestige duel. And a lot of superstars are (how fitting!) The honor in the Prinzenpark.
Messi (still with a small question mark!), Neymar, Mbappé, Verratti, Di Maria on the Parisian side, de Bruyne, Foden, Gündogan on the Cityzens. The French have not won a single time in five games by both clubs. The Skyblues won three times (which twice advanced in a knockout round of the premier class against the Parisians), twice they were drawn.
If this duel of the European nouveau riche is not traditional enough (one could understand it!), FC Porto versus Liverpool FC is recommended as an alternative. The two-time Champions League winner (1987, 2004) from Northern Portugal against the six-time (1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005, 2018) from Northern England.
There have already been eight duels between the two clubs. All of them in this century. Incidentally, the Dragões have never been able to win. The Portuguese certainly suffered the most painful defeat in the 2017/18 season, when the guests from Liverpool practically dismantled them into their individual parts in their home stadium. It was 0: 5 in the end.
Otherwise we would have to offer a tasty Milan vs. Atlético (9 p.m.) in the Tuesday menu. With seven handles, the Rossoneri are historically the second most successful club in Champions League history (behind record holder Real Madrid with 13 trophies).
Unfortunately, Atlético Madrid can only dream of pot pot. The Colchoneros were in a final three times – three times, under very dramatic circumstances, they had to give way to their rivals (one Bayern Munich, two Real Madrid).
Milan are almost forced to score three points after their opening defeat in Liverpool (2: 3). Difficult enough against the defensive artists from the Spanish capital. By the way, the two clubs were first compared: in the 2013/14 season, the Rojiblancos defeated the Italians in the round of 16 (4-1, 1-0).
On Wednesday, the match between Juventus Turin and Chelsea (9 p.m.) outshone all others. At the same time, the new edition of last year’s Europa League final between Manchester United and Villarreal will kick off. And in Lisbon there is even a re-performance of a national championship final: In 1961, Benfica beat FC Barcelona 3-2 in one of the best games in history.
And in Bern. Where the day after tomorrow the Young Boys will try to improve their opening win against Manchester United (2-1). It won’t be easy for the Swiss. Opponent is the Italian surprise team from Bergamo around Robin Gosens.
So a lot of pedigree in this second game day of the European premier class. The pairings of the German representatives read almost a little banal: RB Leipzig receives FC Bruges on Tuesday evening, while BVB receives the Portuguese from Sporting Lisbon at the same time. On Wednesday Dynamo Kiev will be playing in Munich’s Allianz-Arena, while VfL Wolfsburg will greet the always unpleasant Andalusians from Sevilla FC in the local Volkswagen-Arena.
