The Bonprix came within a span of their first Supercoppa victory on the Urania Milano field: the 82-79 final came after a sprint that lasted for the entire last period, after a blaze that in the third quarter had brought the rossoblùs up to +12. A little more precision would have been needed from the arc in the decisive minutes, when the skilful hand of Thomas came out, leading from 30 points of a team that has lined up both Americans. Biella, with Cromer on the sidelines together with Bianchi, found excellent things from the best Porfilio of the season, from Pollone and Bertetti in both halves and of course from Davis, once again the best scorer.
The Bonprix quintet at the duo is the usual: Soviero, Bertetti, Pollone, Vincini and Morgillo. In the other half there are two Americans (Thomas and Davis’ ex-partner in Sweden Walley) and three Italians more experienced than the boys in the red jersey such as Bossi, Cipolla and Paci. The 0-2 with a hook from Morgillo and the first good defenses, including a block from Soviero, deceive Zanchi: Urania has head and muscles to regain control of the game and the rossoblùs help her by collecting turnovers and charging fouls. At 12-4 there is the first timeout called by the Biella bench. Soviero’s third lost ball propitiates the new home +8. Then the point guard leaves the field with two personal, as does Bertetti. But to try to lead a comeback, Pollone thinks about it, present in both halves even if the 22-19 comes out of the soft hands even from three of Steven Davis. Bossi and Montano think about putting things back in order and the 27-19 could have been heavier if Urania had exploited Vincini’s eighth turnover of the period.
To keep Bonprix in good spirits is the percentage from the best pitch of this Super Cup, over 50 percent. It falls in the first half of the second period when both contenders struggle to find the basket. With five minutes left to the siren, the parzialino is an asphyxiated 6-6. The first shock is from the home team, with Pesenato’s 35-25. But it is from there that the rossoblù fire lights up despite the three fouls that send Pollone and Soviero back to the bench: Porfilio, at the best performance of the week, puts in six points and two steals, Morgillo crushes the -4 and the rest is American flour. by Davis who first flies over the iron for -2 and then scores 41 all, suffering the third foul by Thomas, another good news for Zanchi. But to try and get your nose ahead you have to wait after half-time because the extra free throw doesn’t go in.
Not bad, because the first ninety seconds of the third period are all from Biella: the set is 10-2, the points are by Davis and Porfilio, the steals by Bertetti. Bonprix flies up to +11 (44-55) but loses Soviero who spends two fouls in ten seconds before the bench manages to replace him: there are five of them and his intensity remains on the sidelines. The maximum advantage is on 50-62, the result of a superlative Pollone from almost triple double (15 + 9 + 6 at the end). But the last two minutes are a Urania monologue: 9-0 with the last basket 2 ” from the siren on a missed throw-in and given to Walley. 64-66 becomes even with the support of Piunti. Pollone hits from the bow and Porfilio adds +4. But the tug-of-war has just begun: Cipolla signs the overtaking from the corner (74-73) and the match becomes a point-to-point challenge. Aaron Thomas breaks the balance: two baskets in a row bring Milan back to +4. The last gasp is a triple from Bertetti. It could become something more if Davis got two triples and Infante managed to control a defensive rebound with less than 20 seconds left when the point to recover is only one. Instead he falls off the pitch and Milan no longer loses control from the line even if Landi tries a triple draw at the last second. Iron says no. But the Supercoppa glass is half full, even without a win.
