Usa, crisis on the border with Mexico: more than 10 thousand migrants under a bridge in Texas
The humanitarian crisis continues on the US border with Mexico, where in the last few hours more than 10 thousand migrants, mostly from Haiti, have gathered under a bridge, to protect themselves from temperatures close to 40 degrees.
Migrants, also from Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, have formed a makeshift camp under the bridge that connects Del Rio, Texas and Ciudad Acuña, Mexico, waiting to be transported to the US Border Patrol (Usbp) facilities. , the US border police.
“To prevent heat-related illnesses, the shaded area under the Del Rio International Bridge will serve as a temporary stopover while migrants wait to be taken into custody by the USBP,” the federal organization said, saying it has strengthened the staff engaged in the area to facilitate “a safe, humane and orderly process”.
According to Reuters reports, both migrants and Mexican authorities sources said that many more people are expected to arrive in the coming days. Migrants, who have little access to water and food in the camp, they told the US agency that they chose to cross the border along the Rio Grande River because of the shallow water level and the lower activity of smuggling cartels in the area. Hundreds of migrants in the past few hours have been commuting to Mexico to buy basic necessities that they claim not to receive from the US side of the border.
In recent months, migratory flows to the United States have reached record levels. According to data provided by the US government, those detained at the border with Mexico in July exceeded 200 thousand for the first time in 21 years, while in August the people detained were over 195 thousand.
