After losing the opportunity to continue in Formula 1 at the end of 2020, the year in which he ended his experience at the wheel of Red Bull, Alex Albon he was relegated to third driver of the same Austrian team, continuing his career in the DTM. Now, following rumors that they wanted his return to the top flight, this hypothesis has actually materialized for the Anglo-Thai, so much so that he has signed a contract with the Williams for the 2022 season.
However, having embraced realities from the caliber of Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) and Red Bull, Albon lands in a team, like that of Grove, powered Mercedes. A completely different reality from those of Faenza or Milton Keynes, such as to have generated a sort of fear for the team principal of the German house Toto Wolff: the latter, in fact, to avoid the hypothesis of a passing of information on power unit data of the three-pointed star to his former team, added a clause specifies in Albon’s contract to avoid this scenario, while protecting Mercedes data.
This move was confirmed by the Austrian manager himself, who explained this to the microphones of autosport.com: “I have always respected the authority of a team to choose a rider – Wolff commented – I was in Williams, and I never wanted anyone to interfere with our decisions. Likewise, we have no bargaining power that we could have or would have liked to exercise, precisely because I don’t think it’s right to meddle in a team’s decision about drivers. What is important to us – added the Austrian – is that there are very clear confidentiality clauses data in the event that a pilot came from a reality that used different engines. There is a great harmony with Williams, and Albon will be their new driver for the next 12 months: around that time he must not have any connection with Red Bull“.
In any case, Wolff himself expressed his happiness in seeing Albon again on the track, thus analyzing his return as an official driver: “He deserves to return to F1 – he has declared – because he’s a good guy and I’m happy for him. Now that he hasn’t found a seat in AlphaTauri or Red Bull he finds himself in Williams, and I hope he can stay there for a long time ”.
