The Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, which with approximately 3.3 million worshipers is one of the largest Christian churches in the United States, has installed its first openly transgender bishop: Reverend Megan Rohrer, who will lead San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral in California, one of 65 church synods, overseeing nearly 200 congregations across a large area.
The election took place in May, after the current bishop had announced his retirement, and foresees a six-year post at the head of the synod.
Rohrer, who uses the gender neutral pronoun “they”, was also the first transgender person to be ordained by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and previously served in San Francisco, including in the city police department, also being an activist. for the homeless and local LGBTIAQ + community.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church welcomed seven Lgbtiaq + pastors and pastors in 2010, when it allowed homosexual relations of pastors, including Rohrer: “I entered this role because a different community of Lutherans from Northern California and Nevada have devotedly and thoughtfully voted to do this historic thing, ”commented Rohrer, married and with two children.
