The new Champions League season is in the starting blocks. Reason enough to take a look at the top scorers in the history of the premier class before the 2021/22 season. Six of them will be able to further expand their statistics in the coming year.
At the top of the ranking are – how could it be otherwise – the dominant players in recent football history. Cristiano Ronaldo with 134 goals (in 176 games), followed by his eternal alter ego Lionel Messi with 120 goals (in 149 games). Measured by the ratio of goals per game, the Argentine (0.81 hits per match) is even ahead of the Iberian (0.76).
The two are followed by Robert Lewandowski. The reigning world footballer snapped 73 times in 96 games and overtook Real legend Raul last year.
Karim Benzema is currently close behind in fifth place. The real star has only two hits less than Lewandowski on the account. It boils down to a duel between Benzema and Lewandowski in order to rank third behind the two best players of the past 15 years in the all-time Champions League goalscorer list.
The top 10 list of the best goalscorers in the Champions League (or European Champions Cup) still has a little curiosity ready: almost six decades after the end of his active career, the legendary Alfredo di Stéfano is still in eighth place with 49 goals ( in 58 games of the competition under its previous name).
